In theory, training with your significant other sounds like a fun time. And for some people it totally is! BUT if it’s not for you, that doesn’t mean you’re a bad partner or not supportive enough. Sean and I tried to train together during the first bit of our relationship (okay we tried way longer than we needed to to know it wasn’t our thing). I would get SO frustrated with him literally just existing in the same space as me during training because I have to flip such a switch in my mindset as soon as I walk in the gym. We would bicker and argue & would it carry over into things after the gym & it was just never ideal. I always thought “why am I like this? Am I a bad girlfriend? Am I being too selfish?” But the fact of the matter is different people have different training mindsets & those can clash. I walk in to do a job & many others walk in to get relief from their job/life. Some thrive in relaxed, talkative environments & some thrive in silence and being left alone. And THATS OKAY. Step 1 is understanding what you prefer and communicating that with training partners/life partners & also understanding what they prefer. As someone who does have to interact quite a bit in most gym environments that aren’t my home gym, it took me a long time to figure out I just have a very strong preference of my training environment & I have to learn to deal on the fly when (most) are not that way & that’s why I would constantly be on edge trying to make sure I’m catering to whatever Sean may want/need even without realizing it. Hell, I’ve even gotten angry parent DMs bc I wasn’t as outgoing and “nice” as they thought I would be during drop ins or at meet training halls when I’m training. It comes down to COMMUNICATION & being open and honest about what you need. It can be a bit touchy especially in newer relationships, but it’s important to discuss! & if you & your S/O have the same training preferences & it all works great, you’re one of the lucky ones!
