I asked Mary how she escaped her family's pathologies and she spoke about having grown up in a diverse community, not the white, privileged one the rest of the family lived in and she went to summer camp where she learned to love and appreciate nature. What a great example of the importance of children experiencing diversity and being exposed to nature.  But I'm also feeling emotional that we have a man like DT in the White House at the worst possible moment in human history when we need a real, empathetic leader. Trump isn't an accident. He's where he is for all sorts of complex reasons having to do with the failures of neoliberalism, late-stage capitalism and the decades-long work that corporate libertarians like the Koch brothers, the Mercers, the DeVosses, Sheldon Adelson and others have done to fund think tanks, phony (astroturf) grassroots organizations and political operatives that create a false narrative about why the working class is hurting and why big government is bad. Billions of dollars have gone into weakening our democratic system (and allowing unlimited money to buy and influence Congress.) And they do all this under cover so most people aren't even aware of who's taking charge. This has to change.
