Compassion and empathy are triggered when you identify with others, whether human or non-human. The illusion of separateness is what normalizes hate and abuse. There are all sorts of things that can be weaponized to build walls of identity and exacerbate grievances, but none of those things are real. _ Sometimes it feels like there is a kind of automatic defensiveness that gets sparked whenever someone is called out on anything. It’s like we instinctively know we shouldn’t and yet we do anyway. Then, when we are confronted about our moral failures it touches such a sore spot of shame that it’s more instinctive to lash out and get defensive than it is listen and accept responsibility. It’s almost like there is a moral meter of righteousness built in to the circuitry of our inner being that we have to willfully ignore in order to perpetuate oppression. _ I feel like so much of what we do in yoga and the spiritual path is about tearing down walls of division and building up the spiritual strength to finally see through all the illusions. If not, then why are we practicing? Enlightenment has always traditionally been presented as an act of service for the benefit of all beings.
