About 1,000 worshippers attended the first rituals of Hajj, Islam’s most important annual pilgrimage, on Wednesday, after Saudi Arabia put in place crowd control restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic. The holy sites in the cities of Mecca and Medina normally host more than 2 million people during the pilgrimage, as seen in the 2019 Hajj ritual pictured above on the left side. International travelers were barred from taking part in Hajj rituals this year, and authorities say pilgrims performing it were required to self-isolate before arriving in holy cities. For some of them, Hajj comes as a relief after months of confinement and being away from family.
