Dressed in her finest attire this striking portrait shows an elite Ottoman woman in an interior with a view of Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, seen through the window behind.
-
Recently attributed to Italian artist Andrea Vicentino, the painting is one of a number of imagined portraits of sultanas that began to appear in the mid-16th century, showing women of the harem as figures of interest and importance, although from a somewhat idealised Western perspective.

Portrait of a Sultana is currently on display in our London gallery as part of our Old Masters Day Sale Online, which is open for bidding until 1pm BST on 29 July. See link in bio for the full catalogue and to place your bids!
