Adriana’s artwork of choice is the magnificent church of Aleijadinho e Ataíde (1766–1801) in Ouro Preto, Brazil, built and decorated by Aleijadinho, the son of an African slave and a Portuguese slave owner. A jewel of the eighteenth century Brazilian Baroque, the walls and ceiling of Aleijadinho e Ataíde are embellished with marble sculptures, bas-relief carvings, gilding, and vibrant murals. At the apex of the cupola is Aleijadinho's famous painting of the Black Madonna. A subversive character in Brazilian history, Aleijadinho depicted the Madonna, as well as the cherubim and seraphim, as mestiça. Varejão featured the church in her four-channel video installation "Transbarroco" (2014), which explores the impact of mestiço in Brazilian Baroque culture.
