It’s important to raise awareness and acknowledge the deep-rooted white supremacy and anti-Blackness in the sexual health and wellness community. Historically, Black bodies have been a site of violence and experimentation in American history. From the “father of gynecology” experimenting on enslaved women in the 1840s, to the forced sterilization of people of color (e.g. the Mississippi Appendectomies) between 1920-1980, to offering incarcerated individuals a “choice” between using birth control or serving jail time in the early 1900s, to Henrietta Lacks. When being inclusive and intersectional while addressing sex and health, we must acknowledge the harsh truths that come with our history. Racism is real, prevalent, and systemic.
