ナショナルジオグラフィックさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ナショナルジオグラフィックInstagram)「Photos by David Chancellor @chancellordavid In northern Kenya, I observed a team of rangers and veterinarians battle for four hours in the most appalling weather to save the life of a female giraffe. They responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillized—a specialized process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can easily suffocate when tranquillized, so the vet team has to awaken it immediately if it falls unconscious and then hold it down to stop it from standing. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother, the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of the team trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything it could at us—we shivered in pouring rain, warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. Finally all the assembled, including the patient, realized we had come to the end of the road. I'm always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes, nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before. They didn’t fail; they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. Nature took its course, and the predators will feed well tonight. But that team and that giraffe and its calf will stay with me forever. Follow me @chancellordavid @nrt_kenya @natgeointhefield #giraffe #northernkenya #kenya」7月22日 23時44分 - natgeo
