Coffee is a vital part of Ethiopian life. Directly or indirectly, around one-quarter of the population depends on it for its livelihood. In Ethiopia, you cannot be in a hurry when drinking coffee: They have a beautiful, elaborate ceremony that can take a few hours. Neighbors and friends gather. It is the main social event within a village, with a deep reverence for the whole process of crafting it and drinking it. Incense is burned, and the beans are lovingly roasted. You do not leave until you have consumed at least three cups, as the third round is considered to bestow a blessing. An ancient proverb best describes the place of coffee in Ethiopian life: "Buna dabo naw," which means "coffee is our bread."
