Speaking of occult, when I moved to New York from San Diego, on the very first day I set my foot in Manhattan, this was the very first store I happened to roam into when I was heading from midtown to downtown. It was called Magickal Childe which turned out to be famous / infamous for this sort of scene, and since the first few years of my NYC life was like a fever dream, for years I kinda thought I imagined this place, especially because I seemed to catch the tail end of its rich history and it disappeared in a few years after my visit. The inside was like the magic shop from movies like Gremlins (they apparently shot “Vampire’s Kiss” with Nicholas Cage here) filled with jars full of strange portions and the books I had never seen before, and it was generally serious looking place. And for me being a teenager on day one in NYC, it was my first impression of the city and it impressed me in the way that NYC was type of the city that the shop like this could exist.
