Soon after William Henry Johnson's arrival in Norway, he met the reclusive Edvard Munch, the most famous living Norwegian painter and one of the most creative woodcut artists of his time. Munch's distinctive rough-hewn block prints may have inspired Johnson to take up the method again with renewed enthusiasm.
