We remember Congressman John Lewis, civil rights leader and champion for the creation of our @nmaahc.
“He was the conscience of a nation and a voice of moral clarity who spent his life challenging the country to live up to its ideals and extend the blessings of liberty to all,” said Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III.
In the first photo, from our @nmaahc’s collection, Lewis holds arms with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Reverend Jessie Douglas and James Farmer in a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
In 2016, Lewis joined Bunch—@nmaahc’s founding director—for the museum opening. Lewis helped keep the museum alive by introducing legislation every year starting in the 1980s until Congress enacted it in 2003.
