We lost a civil rights great tonight. Representative @repjohnlewis gave so much to this country, to justice, to equality, to progress. My mother got to organize with him when she was a young activist, and spoke of his kind heart and gentle spirit. But he was full of fire: fire for freedom, fire for justice, fire for the future. And he truly lived. Lived to see the Voting Rights Act. To become a United States Representative. To see our first black President, and receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom by his hand. And in our time, this extraordinary time, to witness the dazzling renaissance of the civil rights movement he served so passionately as a young man. He stood in Black Lives Matter Plaza with the black female mayor of our nation’s capital before he left us. And while we still have so very far to go, we have come so very far because he marched, and he never stopped marching. He fought, and never stopped fighting.

And neither will we.
