9 weeks ago my pelvic bone was broken in 4 places, so that’s my excuse to trying to make this top roping video seem a little cooler 🤷🏼‍♀️. This was the first time climbing again in 10 weeks (since my first surgery), and yesterday my surgeon, Omer Mei Dan, approved me to try to climb. As a former professional @レッドブル athlete himself, he has been sympathetic to my plight in stillness, but also has really been communicative when it comes to the cautions I need to take. Since the bones are healed and the screws are secure, I can start pushing it a little. I still have to be careful, hence top roping, and staying on chill terrain, but for a first day back, it sure felt amazing.
Honestly, during the first few weeks after surgery I felt pretty apathetic towards climbing. I didn’t really feel like it was a part of my life in the near future and I wanted to just distance myself from even hearing much about it. Not out of a lack of love for the sport, but just because I didn’t need to be feeling a sense of “fomo” or comparison in not taking part. The entirety of my recovery after the next set of surgeries is 10-12 months. So, I didn’t even think that I would be climbing at all during that time. However, my next surgery is scheduled for August 24 and 31, so as my bones have healed, I figured I could start to dabble back in for fun, and see how it felt. Just being outside, cragging with my friends was worth it enough. Climbing also felt like my native language. I am obviously not sending the gnar by any means. However, finding my groove in the basic movement, feeling the sensations of gritty rock under my fingers, and hanging outside with my friends, breaks down, to the core, a lot of what I love about the sport. Initially I was nervous, even about how the harness would feel on my hip? I had to find adjustments because I have a limited motion in my (left) operated side, and also, considering I can’t yet walk normally without a limp or conquer the stairs smoothly, adjusting weight and generating off that side proved to be a bit difficult. But, this is just the start, and I know, while I have a long road ahead, my connection is still there 💛
