Photo by @lynseyaddario As part of a project to cover the pandemic, I’ve been documenting COVID-19 wards in NHS hospitals and funeral homes across England.

Nurse Josephine Riccobono, 24, comforts a COVID-19 patient named William, who has been in the ICU for over 70 days. He's on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine, which pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body—essentially doing the job of the lungs in order to give the body a chance to rest and recover. Royal Papworth is one of only five hospitals in England to provide ECMO machines for respiratory failure. Even though the U.K.'s death rate is falling, doctors continue to treat patients for COVID-19 across the country, with many fearing a second wave as lockdown rules continue to relax.
