Photo by @max.lowe The bow of the National Geographic Orion plows through heavy swell on the steam back north from the Antarctic Peninsula and across the Drake Passage. The roughly 500-mile-wide (80-kilometer-wide) body of water spanning Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands is known to be one of the roughest spans of water in the world while also having immaculately calm and still conditions, earning its nicknames, the Drake Shake or the Drake Lake.
