People with black or brown skin are outnumbered (at least where we live!), and systemic racism as well as historical exclusion from outdoor recreation can make hiking a scary thing. The Ks have encountered racist remarks and "who are you guys with!?" and "do y'all know what you're doing!?" more times than I can remember - and they usually end up hiking circles around those people.⁣ ⁣ White people, we have to commit to supporting and protecting Black hikers. It's important that they take up space on the trails. It's important that their presence becomes normal. This might mean supporting organizations who make outdoor experiences possible for them. It might look like watching someone's back on your day hike. It might look like stopping a racist joke at a campground. On a thru, it might look like not accepting a hitch into town until your Black friend finds one too. It might involve uncomfortable conversation at a hostel or shelter.⁣ ⁣ I hope my kids' negative experiences fuel their drive to go further and be better. I hope they hold on to the confidence they've gained on our many adventures.
