フィラデルフィア美術館のインスタグラム(philamuseum) - 7月7日 05時26分

William Edmondson began carving stone in the early 1930s after a powerful religious vision led him to the work. He started by making grave markers and went on to sculpt biblical characters, animals, and the people around him. In 1937, Edmondson became the first African American artist to have a one-person exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Here he depicted his neighbor, Miss Louisa. Fearing she would never marry, her father had invited a young man over to meet her. It did not go well, and Miss Louisa is shown holding her caller’s hat, eager to show him the gate.
