Barkley Hendricks painted "Miss T" early in his career, before he pursued his graduate degree. While visiting major museums in Europe in 1966, he noticed the lack of portraits of black figures. When he returned home to Philadelphia, he began painting portraits and created this commanding artwork. Hendricks once stated, “How people dress is how they want to be seen by the world.” His realistic portraits celebrate everyday people and their personal sense of style.
