World War II veteran Sgt. John “Jack” Thurman wears a red cap with Iwo Jima Survivor printed on it. He is one of the few remaining veterans of the pivotal battle in the Pacific War against the Japanese.

Thurman also happens to be the last surviving Marine who raised the flag on Iwo Jim. One of the medals he was awarded is the Bronze Star for Heroic achievement in the battle. Jack was one of the images in a portfolio of portraits that I shoot for, "The Last Voices of World War II" for the @ナショナルジオグラフィック published in June. Happy 4th Jack.
