Wolfgang Brockmann, 93, was 12 years old when Germany invaded Poland and began WWII. Hitler was his idol and he was inspired to get into the fight. When he did very late in the war, he saw atrocities that were “against all the morals that I felt as a German solider.” An older solider executed a Russian soldier who had surrendered, the death and violence that he saw “are the horrors of war, which turn humans into monsters”.
