Mekong gold - the Mekong River forms the border between Myanmar and Laos for a stretch of about 60 miles. Traveling downstream from the China border back in the early 90’s I found farmers in Myanmar, mostly women and children, panning for gold. On the Laos side of the river, elephants outnumbered bulldozers in logging operations along its banks, sending precious hardwood south for markets in Thailand. Timber exports have recently been banned for environmental reasons and I imagine the elephants with them. #mekong #mekongriver #maenamkong #myanmar #laos
