Big bend on the Mekong outside the village of Cizhong, as the river winds its way south towards the border with Laos. We are reading reports that the river has now turned blue due to persistent drought and upstream dams that have robbed the nutrient rich sediment that normally give it its signature muddy brown appearance. Water looks blue when it is clear enough to reflect the color of the sky, in this case, a warning sign indicating poor health in Southeast Asia’s most important waterway. Spanning six countries, the Mekong River is an important lifeline to nearly 60 million people across Southeast Asia. The usually fast-flowing river transports sediments across the region, improving soil fertility for farmers and nourishing fishing grounds, bad news for the fishermen and farmers who depend on it for their livelihoods, not to mention the food supply for the millions living along its banks. #mekongriver #lancangjiang #climatechange
