By the early 1920s, he had earned his reputation as Harlem's preeminent portrait photographer, catering to everyone from brides, jazz musicians, and shopkeepers to members of athletic teams and social clubs, as well as such luminaries as Marcus Garvey, Bill Robinson, Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. and even the young Jean-Michel Basquiat.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A highly inventive photographer and printer, Van Der Zee used a variety of means—including props, painted backdrops, photomontage, retouching, and hand-coloring—to achieve his desired effects.
