Who's up for a game of Hounds and Jackals?
Ancient Egyptians likened the intricate voyage through the underworld to a game. This made gaming boards and gaming pieces (like this one) appropriate objects to place in tombs.
But despite their popularity, the names and rules of some ancient games remain unknown. This game is known as The Game of 58 Holes, or Hounds and Jackals because of the characteristic ends of the playing pins, which are divided in two sets.
The holes, made to fit pinlike playing pieces, formed a track where two players probably raced their pieces until they reached the 30th and final hole, shaped like a shen sign (meaning “eternity”).
