Gay is good, gay is proud” filled the streets of New York. “We stretched out as far as I could see, thousands of us,” recalled one participant. That scene unfolded at Christopher Street Liberation Day, which was held on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, and today is often thought of as New York City’s first pride parade. Segal would go on to have a long career as a civil rights activist and national LGBTQ+ leader. A year before, a teenage Segal found himself in the middle of the Stonewall uprising—a historic series of confrontations between the city's gay community and police—only weeks after traveling from his home in Philadelphia to New York. The Stonewall uprising made a significant mark on LGBTQ+ history and activism in America, but it certainly wasn’t the start of either.
