It starts when Henry is a young boy and talks about how as an enslaved person, he didn’t know how old he was because there is no record of enslaved peoples’ birthdays. It was challenging to read to her because in the book, when Henry gets older, his wife and children are sold to a different slave owner and he is devastated. The end of the book is a happy one— he mails himself in a big box to the North and arrives successfully. But I remember Harlow asking at the end, “Did he ever get to see his family again?” The answer I had to give her was “no.” And then we sat there in silence for a bit while we both took that in. A few days later (this was when she was in kindergarten), I dropped her off at school and noticed that Henry’s Freedom Box was on the class bookshelf. I pointed it out to Harlow, thinking that it was a coincidence that her class had the same book that we had just read at home. But it wasn’t a coincidence at all. She told me that she had found it in the school library and they are allowed to select a book to take back to class so that everyone else can read it. I’m not telling you this to pat myself on the back. It just hadn’t occurred to me that by reading diverse books with my kids at home, they might help other kids discover them when I wasn’t there. It was an unexpected ripple effect. If you’d like to buy Henry’s Freedom Box, click over to @esowonbooks, a Black owned bookshop in LA. You can easily find it in their online shop!」6月28日 2時15分 - mommyshorts
