This is for the wake up that keeps happening over and over and here’s to the demise of the hamster’s wheel of continued judgement about what is good for you is good for the rest. This is one for my son on his birthday and for my daughter for the release of her album today and for my youngest for jumping in the muddy pond yesterday with all her clothes on (which propelled us to do the same) and for my wife who stares off as Billie Holiday pulls at each note or jumps around to Beyoncé with the abandon of a filly for her morning feed. Here’s to the mixing and mashing of color palettes on that American canvas we can all distinctively walk within. Here is to the queers and the cowboys and the protesters and the dreamers and the sober revolutioners and the meth fiends even whose shotguns are empty and whose crushed beer can psyches fill their houses of ennui. Here’s to the circus and the White House and to Ebenezer Church and to the precincts whose cops walk a beat looking out for the best for their communities. Here’s to the housekeepers and the filthy rich and to the fact that they both will smile with the same muscles, be jolted by the same intensities of love and die with the same finality. Here’s to the I see you and I’m pretty sure you see me when we finally sit down for coffee together and just shoot the shit.
