Then there’s that. I forget that some people want to hurt others. I’m lucky. I’ve lived a life where I don’t have to look over my shoulder every day worried that I’m going to be taken out. I don’t have years where oppression has become second nature and the idea of pain isn’t a sensitive reality but something that will most likely, unfairly, meet me somewhere along the road. But now there’s social media to contend with: blind meanderings through a labyrinth searching for what might bring about the most pain. There are professionals here who do it just for kicks, people who find pleasure telling you that the color of your skin is less and that you are a mistake or that your perceived status renders your voice null and void and that your ‘place’ is something to be defined by them. Yet, we grovel to the ones with conviction. Self help gurus and the Hitlers of the world. An immovable belief system is attractive to some and gives them a feeling of security. Give me a grill and a gun so I can be that. Or give me a gang, a family of sorts, and tell me how to please you. All a sheep’s journey: tell me you’re okay with me and that I belong. Or is there a choice to make it nicer for someone during their time here, someone who maybe doesn’t look like you (or does): a living life that you are able to connect with, empathize with, share something with? Can the hoarding of hateful resentments be slowly cleaned away knowing that the cleaning of them will only release you from the confusion they create? I acknowledge your positive, and I hear the negative on social media. But I look to myself and ask: “Do I need it given this gift of a limited time here?”. And the answer is no. Family. Friends. God.
