I like the phrase, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain...” because there will always be obstacles in life, and I believe more in confronting them head on rather than waiting for the “storm” to pass. There will also always be failure wrapped up in pursuing this “dance.” I think that set backs and “failure” are signs that you’re pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and challenging yourself beyond your norm. Often what we see on social media are success stories. But what if we shared more of this “failure?” It’s human, natural, and it’s a part of growth.
This photo is emblematic of exactly that, for me. It is a photo from a route called “La Paciencia,” on the North Face of the Eiger. I did not succeed on this climb, but over the course of this expedition, I learned a lot more than I had known going into this project. The conditions and the climb itself challenged my comfort zones and enabled me to expand my world in the way of confronting unforeseen “storms” in my own trajectory within climbing.
During this experience, there were a host of literal and figurative “storms” that we faced. Some were physical set backs and others were more mental. On this climb, I was told “little girls don’t belong on the Eiger” and dissuaded from the mountain itself. We kept trying, and in the end, we chose a different route up the North Face. While it was not the original goal, I felt a strong sense of satisfaction in pushing through and finding a way to meet what we were facing with a more attainable goal for that time. There were obvious ups and downs to this trip; however the takeaway that I feel in retrospect is that it was an incredibly valuable learning experience. As for La Paciencia, it is still a goal of mine to return one day.
