An affair I have taken in close to my heart is plastic waste, along with an even bigger threat to us all: mass fishing. It’s Overkill and waste. It is estimated that : 970 – 2,700 billion fish are caught from the wild. 640.000 tons of fishing nets are tossed and left in the ocean each year which contributes even more to the kill and death of 130.000 sea mammals each year. Many fishing boats catch & transport fish illegally. A coral reef is the most fragile ecosystem in the world and can take up to 10.000 years to grow. More oxygen is released by phytoplankton than forests. Fishing nets and other destructive ways of fishing have caused irreversible damage and there has been a decrease of deep sea coral populations by about 50%. Fishing companies are destroying all life in the ocean at a shocking rate. Wiping out everything with nets that can go 70km LONG!!! Local fishermen use dynamites or even poison which kills coral reefs drastically as well. This truly disrupts the circle of life, as well as the food-chain cycle, and we truly have to stop living, pretending that these things are not happening;Its just not right, and there will be very big consequences if we do not act and make changes to the way we live If we all put a little effort into being conscious of what we consume and buy, together we can make a difference. We are overpopulating, we are taking over the world, blindly destroying what is crucial to our earth, our lives. Being many of us on earth doesn’t mean we need to operate with mass consumption/production. There is always a way of producing, or consuming something sustainably by putting nature first.
