There is an infuriating petition going around Aruba urging The Netherlands to “take back” the island - for Aruba to surrender it’s fought-for independence after 500 years of being colonized by the Spanish, British and mainly: the Dutch. With the disastrous situation after COVID, people are claiming Aruba’s government can’t manage the situation and suggest the island should be absorbed by the Dutch kingdom so they can manage the “mess”. With the education system and government here all in Dutch (even though according to 2018 census only 6% of the local population speaks Dutch at home), I’m wondering how much real history is taught in school and how such a racist idea could ever be suggested and so widely shared. The idea of the Caribbean islands being “less structured” or somehow behind in terms of development compared to European nations is so often stated as fact. Let’s all contemplate: WHY do you think that is? What do you think happens to a nation that had its indigenous people murdered, all it’s natural resources robbed, and was able to properly form its own government for the first time just 34 years ago? We need to look at history for what it was and go beyond the glorified stories we read in history books written by the oppressors. Instead of Aruba surrendering its independence, how about The Netherlands offer some genuine reparations? Or ANY idea that isn’t taking the island back in time or that pushes the need for a white savior?⁣ ⁣ The indigenous people of Aruba, The Caquetio and Arawak tribes, were settled here for 1500 years before they were eradicated by colonialism. 1500 years. The island was colonized in 1499 and Aruba has only had status aparte since 1986.
