Foysal was among some of the most severe COVID-19 patients in the country, though after 55 days in the ICU, is making great strides with his recovery. Ahmed is on an ECMO machine, Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation , which essentially does the job of the lungs externally in order to give the body a chance to rest and recover. The Royal Papworth is one of only five centers in England to provide ECMO machines for respiratory failure. Even though the UK's death rate is falling, doctors continue to treat patients for COVID-19 across the country with many fearing a 'second wave' as lockdown rules continue to relax.
