It’s Pride Month! Stand up for equality and inclusion. As we are seeing in real-time people around the world demonstrating for Black lives, let’s remember that the first Pride was too a revolutionary protest. The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village was the site of this monumental time where people banded together, standing up for the rights they deserve.
Today, we owe so much to Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two trans women of color and Stormé DeLarverie, a Black drag king and lesbian, who showed the world that together, we can make change.
That week in June 1969 wasn’t the very beginning of LGBTQ+ activist work, and we haven’t reached the end. As Pride returns to its demonstration roots this month, and as we recently saw a historic Supreme Court decision to protect the employment rights of the LGBTQ+ community, we celebrate. We remember the lifelong organizing that Marsha, Sylvia, Stormé and many more have done and continue to do. And we stand up, out, and for the rights of our LGBTQ+ family.
