Did you know there is a canid that lives high up in the same mountain range that Mount Everest is located in ? It is called the Himalayan wolf and it has some special adaptations that allow it to thrive at high altitudes. This wolf has an extra shaggy coat that helps cope with the brutally cold temperatures at these altitudes. It also has special hemoglobin in its blood that allows for more efficient oxygen transport. Interestingly, this is the same adaptation found in Tibetan Mastiff dogs. This strongly suggests at some point humans bred dogs to these wolves to create a breed that could endure high altitudes. It used to be thought that the Himalayan wolf was just a sub species of the grey wolf but DNA analysis points to it being a unique species. Unfortunately, they are endangered so it is important to support conservation efforts. The a Himalayan wolf is truly high on life.
