I really admired the way it was shot, the performances & the way it used music (very influential to Guardians in that way). But how it changed my life was much more personal. Near the end of the film, when the psychologist announced Bess’s prognosis as “good,” I broke down sobbing. Not just tears, but a full on breakdown with maybe 3 other people in the theater. And - I don’t know how else to explain it - I felt the presence of something divine. I’ve since watched the movie again & it didn’t have the same affect on me. And I saw more clearly some of the more controversial aspects of the film. But Breaking the Waves is the only film that’s given me a full-on spiritual awakening.
