The Nicholas Brothers were famous for a style called “Flash Dancing”, which combines tap with acrobatics! Here they are, performing in “Jumpin Jive”, a musical number featured in the 1943 film, “Stormy Weather”! (Originally, the film was in black and white - this version has been colorized).

Believe it or not, the Nicholas Brothers were never formally trained! Their natural talents were discovered by Hollywood as teens, in the 20s. After they were discovered, they were taught by George Balanchine - (an absolute ballet legend), which is why they appear to be trained in ballet 😊

They continued to perfect their craft and develop new skills/learn new stunts as they continued throughout their careers.
They have done it all - Broadway, film, television, live performances, international tours...notably, they have even taught masterclasses at Harvard, worked with Bob Fosse and Gene Kelly, and trained Michael and Janet Jackson.

The brothers became popular during the Harlem Renaissance (An African-American cultural, artistic, and social movement which started in the 1920s in Harlem and truly revolutionized the perception of black America by white Americans). Combining talent with sophistication, they were major figures for the black community for this revolutionary period.

Unfortunately, they were never able to star in their own movie, as their race made them a “novelty” act in Hollywood, which is one of the reasons why they are somewhat unknown today.

Despite facing racism, they were able to pave long, impactful, and legendary careers for themselves. In 1994, the Hollywood Walk of Fame honored them with their own star ⭐️
