Henry Ossawa Tanner was one of the most important Black artists of the premodern period. Tanner first studied and worked in Pennsylvania, but left the United States to study in Paris in 1891. Because American racial prejudice interfered with his career, Tanner settled permanently in France, where he found success and popularity among American expatriates and artist groups.

Here, Tanner depicts the Biblical figure Daniel, whose jealous rivals condemned him to die because he worshipped God as opposed to the king of Babylon. Tanner infused the drama of Daniel’s unjust imprisonment in the lions' den with a quiet spirituality. The composition emphasizes shadows, with a brilliant light illuminating the lower half of Daniel’s figure, especially his bound hands. Daniel appears calm, strengthened by his inner spiritual belief, and Tanner’s use of a blue-green palette heightens this meditative mood.

Henry Ossawa Tanner, "Daniel in the Lions' Den," 1907-1918.
