My hardcore followers may know that I truly love ceramics and that I have an enormous collection of ceramic works, as well as offer them for sale at my galleries. My passion for them culminated in my creating a store with my friend Shin Murata @muratashinwolf in Kyoto. For five years, Shin Murata and his wife @egifusako focused on preparing the store; while Murata continued producing works, he didn’t present them anywhere. He was already struggling with the frustration of not being able to seek validation when he was diagnosed with cancer. After they endured the tremendous predicament, when we rejoiced at the prospect of finally opening the store @tonari_no_murata this April, we were impacted by COVID-19 and haven’t yet managed to open the store. Murata has gone back to spending his days producing his works.
The ceramic figures of Amabie and Amabiko, the yōkai monsters entrusted with expelling plagues, are therefore infused with the artist’s manifold feelings. In art, sometimes your work mysteriously ascends to become beauty itself when you kneed your sizzling feelings such as frustrations and anger into your piece. Whatever the artist’s feelings may have been, these ceramic figures are lovely and adorable.
I will continue to explore the near-future opening date for Tonari no Murata with the artist.
