Garnett Brooks who had a known history of racism (including the infamous arrest of biracial couple Mildred and Richard Loving, swipe left for articles). Sheriff Brooks claimed that my grandfather fell off a train and died of a “broken neck” — often code for lynching. At least one reporter, Sam Lacy of the Baltimore Afro-American, was suspicious at the time (especially considering my grandfather had a pre-paid *bus* ticket in his possession that would have made the train tickets found on him redundant...), but the reporter never published an article with his suspicions as far as I can tell.
