Led Zeppelin ／9thアルバム “ CODA” ( 1982年 )。
・当時高校1年生(15歳／岡山)だった僕は、既に解散していたLed Zeppelinの全盛期を見たかった〜 っと、どうしようもない欲求を抱えていた。
アルバムタイトル “ CODA”は音楽用語で最終楽章という意味らしい。まだ未発表の曲があったのか？！と発売日にレコード屋へ急いだ。とは言え未発表って事は残りものだもんなぁ〜と、少し舐めていた僕の鼓膜にのっけから強烈なドラムが突き刺さった。最高すぎる！！！
そうこのアルバム発売2年前の1980年9月25日ウォッカを40杯も飲み、酔ってゲロを詰まらせ窒息死した怪物ジョン・ボーナム 〈 愛称はボンゾ 〉のドラムだ！勿論思い込みもあるが、ボンゾの追悼的な意味もあるこのアルバムの主人公は強烈なドラムである。
7曲目のBonzo's Montreux では、ほぼドラム&パーカッションだけで展開！パワーとスキルが凄いのは当然だけど、それだけではなくて、聴いたことのない( 後に言うポストロック的な)サウンドに出会ってしまい、強いショックを受けた。
この強烈なおこぼれ曲達は僕にとっては本当に凄いラストアルバムでしかない。すなわちLed Zeppelinの全盛期に立ち会えたのだ！( そう思いたい )
メンバー4人全員が怪物である事は疑いようもない事実だが、Led Zeppelinはボンゾの死によりファーストアルバムのジャケットに描かれたZeppelin／硬式飛行船が爆発するように解散！ 伝説になるバンドは奇跡的で強烈なケミストリーが少しでも壊れた瞬間立ち行かなくなってしまうのだ。ボンゾのいないLed Zeppelinはキャタピラのない戦車だ！ちなみにDeep Purple派？Led Zeppelin派？ってとんでもない質問する奴を・・・ 僕は信用できる訳がない！

・When I was at high school (15 yrs/ Okayama), I wished I could see their peak before breakup although I knew it wouldn’t happen. I heard “CODA” means a musical segment that brings the piece to an end. Surprised to know there were yet-to-be-released, so rushed for a record shop though I underestimated it equal to leftovers. But from the first, the strong drum stabbed my eardrums. This is John Bonham (a.k.a. Bonzo), a monster who died through inhaling vomit after drinking 40 glasses of vodka. I believe his drum is hero of this album, as this is partly for a memorial to his death.
Bonzo’s Montreux, the 7th piece, has great sound developed only with drums & percussion! Of course it’s powerful and his skill is great, but I was shocked to come across the sound I’ve never heard (it may be said post-rock later). To me, these awesome leftovers were the essentials of the very last album. In short, I could see their peak! (I want to think this way.)
All of the band members are monsters but they broke up as if Zeppelin on the 1st album’s sleeve would explode for Bonzo’s death. Legendary band comes to an end when the miraculous and intense chemistry breaks even a little. Anyway, I don’t trust people asking “are you a Deep Purple person, or Led Zeppelin?” ... Terrible!
