Its sees the vastness of life at ground level...weeds, spiderwebs, tucked above a barrel of heating oil that resembles a buffalo. Almost no light enters this space. In the basement is where the simple pieces of my life are still in boxes of a life on hold. I come here periodically to search the handwritten notes for things I know exist, losing my mind trying to find... “Where’s the paper trimmer?”... “I know there are kitchen plates. They’re somewhere over... ”There’s a box of studio supplies, with large clips I use for taxes, where is it?!“. Today I tried to find a lampshade. I know it’s here because I remember packing the green glass very delicately nine-months ago when the farm sold... two hours later, I let it go, using a makeshift red shade, so there’s light at night on the mama table upstairs. I did find many things I hold on to... the final possessions of my father before he died from Alzheimer’s, boxes and boxes of film, camera cases that have seen so many planes they need a passport. Even Sukarno, first president of Indonesia, hangs out in the basement. Sure glad I found my marbles, thought I lost those.
