Karma Tsering Sherpa sits in meditation in his home in the village of Phortse, Khumbu Valley, Nepal.
I made this portrait 11 years ago while on a climbing trip with one of my best friends and creative-collaborator, @renan_ozturk. Karma himself is nearly Sherpa 'royalty' and has appeared in feature films as well as in the pages of #natgeo. His life story has been told piecemeal via vignettes (like this one) for years. If you ask him how old he is, the answer takes form via an animated rummaging-through of Tibetan calendars, fragile yellowed pages turned under a shaking magnifying glass. No clarity is offered. Suffice to say he's seen a lot, from the first expeditions wandering up the valley to the airplanes and helicopters buzzing overhead.
Last time I saw him, he was perched on his rooftop hang, staring up at the mountains.
