In wildlife filmmaking, letting an animal enter an empty frame is important. These are useful shots for editing together a wildlife sequence, particularly when you want to introduce a character. The challenge with this dugong was knowing exactly where he was going to land after returning from the surface. However, I noticed that the juvenile golden trevally fish following the dugong around often would not tail him to the surface. Instead, they would stay close to the bottom—and give a pretty good indication of where the dugong would land next. So rather than straining my neck looking up at the surface and then having to guess where to frame up, I just followed the fish.
