“At this moment, the Devil is furious, and the soldier uses his violin to ward him off,” the choreographer @robertwlafosse said of “A Soldier’s Tale” (“L’Histoire du Soldat”), a new work for NYTB/Chamber Works at @danspaceproject this week. In this classic tale, set to Stravinsky, a soldier makes a deal with the Devil, giving up his fiddle for wealth. As the Devil, @johnkelly.performance becomes “wiggly-wiggly-squiggly,” John said. “In the text, it’s when he gets weak in the knees — so it comes from that idea of menace moving through the body.” Robert, a former principal with @abtofficial and @nycballet, has been thinking about staging “A Soldier’s Tale” for more than 30 years and felt the time was right. “It’s so relevant for what we’re going through politically: selling your soul to the Devil,” he said. And he remembered the lessons of the choreographer and director Jerome Robbins. “Jerry always said, ‘Why do you need to tell this story now?’” Robert told the #nytimes dance critic @giadk. “It’s so topical. It’s a morality tale, and there is no happy ending.” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
