Today is Setsubun in Japan. To mark the beginning of spring and to celebrate the new year according to the Chinese calendar, for some reason we perform the ritual of driving out demons and inviting the fortune into our homes.
Throwing roasted soy beans out of the room, we scream, “Demons out!” and throwing them into the room, we say, “Fortune in!”
This year, I played the part of the demon and my employees threw the beans at me, taking out their day-to-day frustrations. It hurt.
