Have you ever heard the story of how the bontebok bounced back from near-extinction? In the 1800s, there were only 17 members of this antelope species left due to drastic overhunting. But a farmer, and a fence, helped save it. Unlike other antelopes, like the high-flying springbok, bontebok aren’t able to jump up to clear even a low farm fence. So when the few remaining bontebok were fenced in on a farm in Arniston, South Africa, there they remained, protected from the wild and hunters. Thanks to continuous conservation efforts since then, that original herd expanded and gained additional protection through the formation of Bontebok National Park. Today, there are 2,500 to 3,000 individuals.
