Video by @lucalocatelliphoto | This coal and mineral ore storage facility in the port of Hamburg is surrounded by wind turbines that extend into the distance. These minerals were shipped here from thousands of miles away to feed coal plants and heavy industry throughout Germany. In the wake of environmental crisis, Germany aims to phase out coal energy production; by 2022 an estimated 12 coal plants will be shut down, making renewables the main source of power for the country. But at this moment Germany is still producing more than 30% of its energy needs with coal. Wind energy accounts for about 20% of German production, a visible reminder of the transition across the nation. For the last four years, I have been documenting the German Energy Transition— Energiewende—a government program to make Germany free of fossil fuels by 2050. My focus as a photographer is to explore this transition and how technology could limit our impact on the planet.
