The incredible team from Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw) #Avantea, @OlPejeta Conservancy, @KenyaWildlifeService and @SafariParkDvurKralove has conducted another successful ovum pickup from Najin and Fatu, daughter and granddaughter of Sudan and the last two northern white rhinos on the planet. The oocytes (immature egg cells) were transported immediately to the Avantea Laboratory in Italy. Over Christmas, they were incubated, matured and fertilized, creating one viable embryo. That embryo joins the two others created this past August. They are being stored in liquid nitrogen to be transferred into a surrogate southern white rhino mother sometime this year. As Richard Vigne of @olpejeta noted, “We have taken yet another small step along the road of saving the northern white rhino from extinction...
