At 87, Duane Michals is as mischievous and irrepressible as a teenager, kicking up his heels for photographers, cracking jokes, and working at a steady pace. “I’m having a great old age, considering all the possibilities. I’m dazzled by it,” he told Joel Smith, the curator of photography at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Michals and Smith joined forces for an exhibition titled “Illusions of the Photographer,” a terrific Artist’s Choice show that juxtaposes Michals photographs with an extraordinary range of material from the Morgan collections, including drawings by Egon Schiele, William Blake, and Saul Steinberg; a memorial wreath from the funeral of Pierpont Morgan; and Goethe’s quill pen (the show continues through February 2, 2020). Among the photographers in this heady mix–Eugène Atget, Irving Penn, Herbert Matter–is Louis Faurer, whose image of a couple at Penn Station in the mid-1940s is reproduced here.
